Embedded & IoT Roadmap
Go from breadboard basics to a connected device that publishes telemetry to a live dashboard.
Outcome
Design, wire and program a sensor node that survives real-world power, reads calibrated data, and streams it to a dashboard you can explain end to end.
The path
6 stages · move in order, or jump to the gap you need to close.
- 01
Electronics foundations
2 weeksVoltage, current, resistance, Ohm's law and safe breadboarding. Learn to read a schematic before touching a board.
- 02
Microcontroller programming
2 weeksGPIO, timing, debouncing, analog input and the serial monitor. Write small sketches that do one thing well.
- 03
Sensors and buses
3 weeksRead digital, analog, I2C and SPI devices. Learn addressing, pull-ups, calibration and how to debug a silent bus.
- 04
Displays and actuators
2 weeksDrive relays, motors, servos and displays without browning out the board. Understand flyback, current limits and grounding.
- 05
ESP32 and connectivity
3 weeksWi-Fi provisioning, HTTP clients, MQTT and over-the-air updates. Handle reconnect logic and offline buffering.
- 06
Dashboards and capstone
3 weeksStore telemetry, build a dashboard and add alerts. Finish with a documented device that runs unattended for a week.
How to use this roadmap
Build one small circuit per concept. If a sensor does not respond, stop and debug the bus before adding another component. The capstone is intentionally boring: a reliable device that logs data beats an ambitious prototype that resets every hour.
Checkpoints
- Stage 1 — blink an LED, read a button and explain every component on the breadboard.
- Stage 2 — debounce a button and plot a potentiometer over serial.
- Stage 3 — read two I2C sensors and print calibrated values.
- Stage 4 — drive a servo and a relay from the same board without resets.
- Stage 5 — publish telemetry over Wi-Fi with reconnect handling.
- Stage 6 — a dashboard with a week of clean data and one working alert.
Capstone ideas
- A room monitor that tracks temperature, humidity and CO2 with a rolling chart.
- A plant waterer that reports soil moisture and alerts on a dry tank.
- A workshop air-quality node that logs particulate matter and triggers a fan.
Safety notes
Never switch mains voltage on a breadboard. Use a properly rated relay module, keep high-voltage wiring physically separated, and fuse your power input.
