Frontend Developer Roadmap
A practical, project-first path from HTML and CSS to a deployed portfolio, testing and interview readiness.
Outcome
Ship three portfolio-grade projects, understand the browser platform, and walk into a junior frontend interview with a clear story about your work.
The path
6 stages · move in order, or jump to the gap you need to close.
- 01
Web fundamentals
2 weeksLearn how the browser requests, parses and renders a page. Get comfortable with semantic HTML, forms, accessibility and the CSS box model.
- 02
JavaScript core
3 weeksTypes, scope, closures, arrays, objects, the DOM and async patterns. Build small interactive widgets rather than watching endless videos.
- 03
Tools and workflow
1 weekLearn Git, the terminal, package managers and a build tool. Commit early, write clear messages and keep branches small.
- 04
A component framework
4 weeksPick one framework and go deep. Learn components, props, state, routing, data fetching and how to structure a real application.
- 05
Testing and performance
2 weeksAdd unit and end-to-end tests, then measure Core Web Vitals. Learn to read a trace and fix the slowest thing first.
- 06
Portfolio and interviews
3 weeksPackage three projects with case studies, then practise explaining trade-offs, debugging and system design fundamentals out loud.
How to use this roadmap
Treat this as a sequence of checkpoints, not a race. Each stage ends with something you can show: a page, a widget, a deployed app or a written case study. If you already have experience, jump to the stage where your evidence runs out.
Checkpoints
- Stage 1 — a responsive, accessible landing page with a working contact form.
- Stage 2 — an interactive dashboard that fetches and filters real data.
- Stage 3 — a clean repository with meaningful commits and a README.
- Stage 4 — a deployed application with routing and persistent state.
- Stage 5 — a test suite and a Lighthouse report above 90 on all core metrics.
- Stage 6 — three case studies and a rehearsed interview story.
Project ideas
- A job board that filters by stack, location and salary.
- A reading tracker with local persistence and optimistic updates.
- A public API dashboard with caching, loading states and error recovery.
What to ignore for now
Skip micro-frontends, complex monorepos and framework internals until you have shipped something real. Depth in the fundamentals compounds faster than breadth in tooling.
